John Mann MP is launching a survey of young people on their website about Votes at 16 following the vote by Labour’s National Policy Forum recommending that Labour promises to lower the voting age of 16 in the next manifesto The overwhelming victory was achieved as a result of the hard work of all the youth representatives on the forum, who spent the weekend winning the argument about votes at 16. The amendment passed by a large majority.
Olivia Bailey, Vice Chair of Young Labour and proposer of the amendment said about the vote:
"As a former Member of the UK Youth Parliament I was proud to champion the Votes at 16 motion. Young Labour has listened to the excellent campaigns organised by the British Youth Council, UK Youth Parliament and other youth organisations - Young Labour was keen to spearhead this within the Labour Party."
“I urge those who support votes at 16 to sign up to Young Labour’s campaign online at http://votesatsixteen.labourspace.com/”
Young Labour is now campaigning to make sure that the promise is included in the Labour Party’s next General Election manifesto.
John Mann MP said
“I was delighted that the National Policy Forum voted so overwhelmingly in favour of votes at 16, and commend the hard work of all those who have campaigned on this issue.
“I am convinced that if people at the age of 16 can pay taxation, get married, pay adult fares on the buses and join the army, they should be entitled to the right to vote.“
Dawn Butler MP, the Labour party’s Vice Chair (Youth) joined the campaign saying:
“It’s time that young people had a say over issues that affect them everyday. Around the UK, Tory, Lib Dem and SNP councils are cutting youth services despite Labour massive funding increases. Not only is the Labour Party and Labour councillors fighting off these cuts, Labour is now giving young people the vote and the chance to fight back.” |
