There has been much coverage in the news surrounding the Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) scandal. The head of PIP, Jean-Claude Mas has admitted using cheap silicone gel in his products in order to cut costs. Women have experienced problems with PIP implants when they have leaked or ruptured. It is estimated that somewhere between 40,000 and 50,000 women British women have PIP implants. Local MP John Mann has been contacted by a number of local women who have had PIP implants who are seeking his support to get the medical help that they need.
John Mann is calling upon the Government to create a national register of all the people who have received PIP implants to identify and monitor whether and when they need surgery for the removal of the implants.
Mann is also calling for the establishment of a compensation scheme to cover the costs of replacement surgery and for the unnecessary pain and suffering that this will cause.
He said “this is a terrible example of an unregulated cosmetic surgery industry offering breast enlargement surgery on the cheap and how it can all go horrifically wrong. This is a scandal that has been waiting to happen and its women from communities like Bassetlaw that suffer as a consequence of poor regulation and limited controls. The Government needs to establish a compensation scheme so that those companies that have used the cheap PIP implants are responsible for paying for the damage that they have caused.”
John Mann is inviting Bassetlaw women who have had PIP implants to a meeting so that he can hear at first hand their experiences and then ensure that they get the support they need during this difficult time. The meeting will be on Saturday 25 February at 1pm at 68A Carlton Road, Worksop S80 1PH. John Mann can also be contacted at mannj@parliament.uk
