Recent Parliamentary elections have seen John Mann elected back onto the prestigious Treasury Select Committee.
This is an influential committee that holds the Government, Bankers and UK industry to account on their economic policies and activities.
Modernisation of Parliamentary practices has seen a rule change this term. MP's are no longer selected by the Whips for positions on the Parliamentary committees and they have to now put themselves forward for election by their fellow MP's.
Since the General Election Labour are entitled to five places on the Treasury Select committee. Nine Labour MP's were nominated and following the election last Tuesday, John Mann was elected onto the committee.
John Mann served on the Treasury Select Committee from 2003 -2005 and was reappointed in January 2009. During his time he raised serious concerns regarding debt and the over-willingness of credit card companies to increase limits or issue new cards without the appropriate checks on a clients ability to repay the money. This touched a nerve with people right across the country and his campaign received national publicity and led to changes in how credit card companies operate.
In February 2009, John received national notoriety when the country watched him questioning ex-RBS boss, Fred ‘the Shred' Goodwin on live TV. This led to Sir Goodwin giving back half of his pension settlement.
John pursed a degree in economics at Manchester University and has an in depth understanding of the economy.
John Mann commented "I am very pleased and honoured to be re-elected to the Treasury Select Committee and I wish to thank my colleagues for voting for me. We are now in an era of huge budget cuts alongside the dismantling of the welfare state and I am looking forward to challenging the Government and holding them to account on the day to day problems that ordinary people will face".
