You know that if a letter is too wordy then the writer has little to say. So it is with Peter Reading, Boss of the Hospital Trust. He picks up on my transcribing error and then takes credit for all the good work done by Nigel Clifton when Peter Reading was managing a failed hospital merger in Leicester.

But anyone who really wants to see what a disaster his term as our highest paid public servant has been need only look today at the car park at Bassetlaw Hospital. This man has spent a lot of money on the car park and the result is a half empty car park and cars straddling Wingfield Avenue and many residential streets. What a legacy to leave.

The Government is considering removing staff and ticket offices from 585 railway stations including ours at Worksop.

Despite record train passengers, this is the latest over the top cut. I believe that our railway station should keep its staff and that we should be expanding the service to Nottingham and Sheffield and introducing a direct service to London.

Back in Parliament this week there is a lot of glee about developments in Libya. Removing a mad man is one thing, but who will take over? I am fearful that we will see exactly what the Americans found in Afghanistan 30 years ago. The tyrants thrown out and then a coup by Islamic extremists. David Cameron and his French mate, Sarkozy should spend their time working out how to avoid such a disaster.

Rumours abound that progress is being made on the banning of cars from Bridge Place. The Council will be very popular if it succeeds in this.

I have a complementary proposal. The top of Bridge street, from the new cinema down to the Acorn theatre should be designated as Bassetlaw’s cultural quarter. I would welcome cafes being allowed to have a permanent presence, European style, out into the street, while money should be earmarked from future budgets to open up the Acorn onto Bridge Street- perhaps with a traditional arcade style gate?

This area ought to be one to linger in, with street entertainment, in contrast with the fast moving hard trading bottom end of town. The contrast would work well and encourage more people into the town centre.
