John Mann in the Worksop Guardian: 9 April 2010

I had the privilege to participate in another Help for Heroes event on Friday. When I was talking to the charities Nottinghamshire Organisers they pointed out that Worksop and the surrounding area is at the top of their national fundraising list with the highest number of events being organised to support this most important of causes. Yet again, Bassetlaw shows its pride and its support for our armed forces.

Its predicted that more than £8 million will be repaid by solicitors to the miners and their families who have been charged for their compensation payments. The Law Society are now suggesting a deadline for dealing with this issue. All claims for money to be refunded should reach them by July 31st. Make sure your family does not lose out if you had a claim and were charged fees.

With another crash on the A60 this week, the reductions in speed limits that have been previously agreed need to be implemented without delay. However a lower speed limit is only one part of the solution. I have repeatedly asked for speed cameras on dangerous roads, including specific requests for the A60. They are needed more than ever to enforce a maximum of 20 mph outside schools, 30mph in built up areas and 50 mph maximum on rural roads.

The Rockware sports fields are about to be released for public use under an agreement by the new recycling company MBA Polymers. These sports fields will be used for cricket, football and other sports use, re-establishing some of the highest quality sports fields in the district. I am delighted that this company, which is creating over 100 new jobs, has shown such a magnificent support for our community.

In direct contrast, Jarvis is a company that represents the down side of the business world as it kicks out its workforce in its battles with Network Rail. Whoever is in power on May 7th, getting these men back to work and maintaining our rail network should be the very first priority.

With a General Election now called, this column is suspended for the election period. However you choose to vote, please remember how important our democracy is and get out and vote.

Make sure you don't lose your vote at the General and Local Elections on 6th May. You have until 20th April to register as a voter or to register for a postal vote.

I understand that postal votes will be sent out on April 27th for the General Election, and a few days earlier for the local elections. If you are away then and on Election Day then you should request a proxy vote.
