John Mann has welcomed the Government’s decision to award a badge of recognition to female war veterans who worked to provide food and timber for the nation during the Second World War. The
specially designed badge will recognise the tremendous efforts of the Women’s Land Army and Women’s Timber Corps and acknowledge the debt that the country owes to them.
The veterans have been campaigning for many years for recognition. At the end of the Second World War it was decided that, as a civilian organization, service in the Women’s Land Army and
Women's Timber Corps would not be recognised as service in the Armed Forces, so they were not entitled to a medal.
Upon hearing the announcement John Mann said “Its about time! I am delighted that we are honouring these women who showed determination, courage and spirit in such extra-ordinary
circumstances. They worked tirelessly from dawn until dusk, without the benefits of the technologies we have today. For a lot of them, this was the first time they had ever been on a farm,
let alone worked on one. It is absolutely right that we recognise their efforts and the debt that the country owes to them”.
