John Mann in the Worksop Guardian: 5 February 2010

Worksop town supporters have called a demonstration outside the Bassetlaw Cabinet meeting next Thursday in Retford to protest against the shocking decision of Bassetlaw Council to block the 1000 jobs and Football Stadium at the Vesuvius site. The protest is at 6.30 pm in advance of the Cabinet meeting at 7pm in Retford Town Hall.

There might also be other protestors at the Council meeting campaigning against the removal of the cash paying facilities and the loss of the bulky refuse collection. These penny pinching cuts are not sensible. I predict a huge rise in fly tipping if people have to travel up to 25 miles on a round trip to the Council tip. I believe that there should be an increase in the bulk refuse collection across the District as it is a major Council success

Some traders are keen to encourage more bus services into the town. Perhaps the Vesuvius developer could do a deal and relocate the overnight bus depot out to the edge of town, as this will then remove the obstacle that is currently blocking the promised County Council development of a new bus station? This would be a real town centre boost and needs to be on top of, not instead of, the promised football stadium.

I am able to make a nomination to the National Small Shop of the Year Awards. If you have a shop you want me to consider then please email me as soon as possible at mannj@parliament.uk. We have a lot of excellent local shops and it is good to recognise their importance to us all. I need your nominations this weekend.

I was one of the sponsors of a Bill in Parliament to guarantee the maintenance of all war memorials. I was shocked to see how this has required local fundraising in Worksop. This cross-party bill proposed by ten of us is an excellent bill and I hope it becomes law.

Two Council stalwarts were recognised by the Prime Minister at 10 Downing street this week. Tenants leader, Helen Woodhead from Mattersey Thorpe and A1's Dave Crisp who is also a key figure in local football were both invited down to a Community Heroes Reception. From the two sides of A1 Housing they represent many tenants active in the running of housing and the loyal A1 workforce. I want to see A1 go from strength to strength and be given the ability to start building housing, including pensioner bungalows, as is happening in Bolsover and elsewhere in the country.
