A Different Kind of MP

    John Mann's weely column: 4 June 2010

17 days into the new government and another one bites the dust. This time it is David Laws MP who had to stand down as a top Cabinet Member for breaking the rules on his expenses. There seems to be quite a furore of defending him in Parliament because he is gay and didn't want his mother to know. In which case he shouldn't have fiddled his expenses should he? I don't care what his sexuality is, or anyone else's, but it is certainly no excuse for wrongly claiming £40 grand. No doubt I am even more unpopular is the Palace of Sin in Westminster for pointing this out.

As I am at it, I may as well stick the boot into John Prescott and all the other who have become new members of the House of Lords. One of the failings of the last government was its reluctance to get rid of this unelected quango, or at least make it elected. Strangely those such as Prescott who were always hostile to Lords have now come up with excuses about why it is important for them to be in there. As we are cutting back on public spending, why not cut the House of Lords expenses in the budget? How about to nothing- let them come in at their own expense until Parliament has the common sense to get rid of them or elect them.

I am not even allowed to ask questions about the Lords, their expenses and high living. The only people who can ask such questions are the unelected members of the House of Lords. George Orwell couldn't have written these rules could he?

Some bright spark has come up with the idea of closing the Eastgate Centre and merge it with other services at the inappropriately small Boundary Centre. What a disgrace. I have visited the Eastgate centre on several occasions and it is ideal for its many users, who require the space and setting to organise themselves. The idea that all disabled people are the same and can be shoved into together is both ignorant and insulting. Well they have a fight on their hands with this one and I hope that the whole community rallies round these determined group of people- because they intend to fight the proposed closure.
