A Different Kind of MP

Amy Jeffrey did her family, her village of Langold and the people of Bassetlaw proud this week through her campaign to allow student nurses and others to be eligible for a funeral grant. Amy tragically lost her husband in an accident and is a student nurse in Chesterfield. Having met some of her very supportive family, I am quite certain that her husband, Rowland would have been especially tremendously proud of her. Thank you to everyone who has supported her petition and indeed keep the names coming in. You can do this on my website here.

Amy and her family witnessed the extraordinary behaviour of a petulant MP who pushed past to grab papers from the table we were sitting at. I heard him swearing at me earlier and issuing silly threats. His beef with me is the Kelly Report on MPs expenses and how unhappy he is with it. Tough! Parliament no longer has the moral authority on MPs expenses and we therefore have to back the report by Sir Christopher Kelly in full and without amendment. If this pompous MP or others don't like it they can stand down at the next election.

Bonfire Night is approaching and the improved laws on fireworks seem to have had an impact. We still have some indiscriminate sales and thuggish use of fireworks, but not as much as we used to have. I hope that continues this year. I would only allow organised fireworks events and I recommend the bonfires at Rugby Clubs at Worksop and Retford as the top attraction in a week's time on Saturday 7 November.

Anti social behaviour continues to be my number one priority alongside facilities for young people. I have proposed a new approach targeting problem houses, where there are always issues plaguing decent neighbours. Often one particular house becomes an open house from which nuisance spreads. The behaviour is often depressingly similar: regular bonfires in the garden; young people hanging around throughout the evenings and weekends and several staying overnight; loud music into the early hours; unkempt gardens; several dogs wandering around; absent parents or abusive parents; unlicensed motorbikes; eggs thrown at other properties; abuse of neighbours and indeed anyone unfortunate enough to be passing and alcohol made available to under age drinkers.

These magnets of anti social behaviour need all the agencies on top of them together. Police for criminal activities. Housing for tenancy breeches. Others include environmental health, the DVLA, TV licencing and school truancy officers. We need to make examples of those who show no respect whatsoever to their neighbours and communities. To highlight this I visited several such properties with the police chief last week to look and see who are the main bullies on the streets.
