John Mann in the Worksop Guardian: 29 January 2010

After 92% voted in favour of the football and sports stadium and the 1,000 job development in my unbiased telephone poll, which was covered by market research rules and laws, it needs to be. The small minority who are opposed, by the way, include some who say they are against any new supermarkets. With many thousands more also signing petitions in workplaces, pubs, clubs and schools across the area and town centre traders supporting the campaign, the council is now on the ropes.

We need to help them out of their misery and give them a get out. Yes, yes, I know that most of you would rather they were simply knocked out, but there may be a quicker and cleaner way: unconditional surrender to the views of the people of Bassetlaw.

The terms of the surrender are very simple: the developer needs to resubmit the plan, strengthening its commitment to Worksop Town's new stadium and adding an all-weather pitch alongside. This will be quicker than an appeal to government.

Having attended a meeting of angry families at St Michael's View Care Home and another with Hallcroft residents and tenants, I know that the Seven are also feeling the heat in Retford, because Retford also want more no cuts and more jobs and I agree with them. Also, many villagers are after them for cutting the very popular Saturday refuse collection service.

We also need to use this opportunity to properly sort out the town centre. My proposal has been there for four years: make car parking free for the first two hours. Secondly, get anyone causing a nuisance moved on or locked up, including maniacs who speed through the town on bikes. Thirdly give the place a facelift and make it more welcoming. Traders have their own views which are probably better than mine and its about time they were given real control of the town centre. Mind you when that last happened the Council quickly moved to shut down their organisation.
