Just when it seemed that I could not get more unpopular amongst certain MPs, the issue of second jobs has raised its ugly head I am proposing that there be no second jobs for MPs. As usual the old chestnuts are trotted out that we need MPs with a wide experience of life. But this is precisely why we need no more moonlighting!
I was offered a £20,000 consultancy to represent the interest of a major national company. I would have made a mint doing so and every minute would have been time stolen from working for you.
I use my former skills without the need for a second job. On Tuesday I was with young Worksop woman, Emma Whitaker helping her win an Employment Tribunal in Sheffield. Emma won against a scandalous employer called Express Wellness, who feature on the website of the duck pond scandal MP. We will now pursue this company for Emma's money.
I also use my business experience- real business experience - when I'm on the Treasury Committee trying to hold the bankers, the Bank of England and the Chancellor to account.
Yet again I hear the rumblings and even abuse from these MPs who believe they are underpaid and hard done by. I disagree, the job an MP is a full time job and there should be a ban on second jobs for MPs. In fact most second jobs are nothing more than cash for access to decision making.
My well attended veterans event took place two weeks early to co-incide with events at Clumber Park and this week has seen more events locally at our Town Halls and across the country. Our current troops need just as much recognition and support as possible. Every victory they win in Afghanistan is a blow to terrorists and means less heroin on the streets of Britain - we should all get behind them. Well done to the local mothers and family members who are organising support for our troops in Afghanistan.
