Sometimes governments get it wrong.  Usually politicians either run for cover or change the subject.

Having challenged the government with a quote printed in the Sunday Times, I have been inundated with offers to be interviewed by Britain’s most famous journalists. Instead, I will make my views and actions be known through this newspaper.

I told the chancellor face to face that the budget was wrong and had left some local people worse off. I explained that it was totally unacceptable to leave hard working people paying more tax this year and he needed to U-turn.

I met the Prime Minister, one to one, and made the same points, using precise examples given to me by Worksop residents. And I proposed two things, one use of the winter fuel allowance to fully compensate 60-64 year old pensioners, some of whom have lost out. And an additional measure to compensate those younger who have lost out.

And I proposed that this be paid by further cracking down on tax avoidance, benefit fraud and in the future by rewarding work rather than unearned income. But I also sought more and received a clear assurance. I want everyone to benefit this year from the budget. And I want hard earning people who are less well paid than they should be to be the winners in future budgets.

I am now demanding that the next increase in the minimum wage be significant to underpin this approach.

One way or another everyone should therefore be fully compensated during this year, backdated to the start of the financial year, and my office will take precise details of everyone affected who wishes me to keep a detailed eye on this. It will of course likely to be the Autumn before this money is sorted out and paid back. Unravelling complex budget changes is neither quick nor easy.

Others MPs had vague stories of what was happening. I had detailed accounts, brought in by fast thinking and angry local people. Your trust in me to pass on these details was of real significance and I have had dozens of MPs thanking me for my interventions on Monday and Tuesday.

Mistakes happen. People get things wrong. Better to own up and put right rather than to bluster and fluster. In football terms I would say an own goal by the government, but an equaliser by the hard working taxpayers of Bassetlaw. Thank you,  and on behalf of government and Parliament: sorry.
