Some of the commentary on the World Cup shambles is even more pathetic than the players' performance. Dave Whelan, owner of Wigan Athletic, calls for the Premier League to run the England side. This is the man whose club plays to half empty stadiums but gets a huge TV revenue payment each year. Nobody would ever pay per view to see Wigan Athletic would they?
And Mr Whelan has employed a Spanish manager and players from 15 different countries. Anyone wanting to know why we did so badly at the World Cup need look no further than Wigan Athletic. Whelan was also the chairman who moaned about police costs being charged to his club. So he can take TV money that his club has never deserved, spend it on foreign players on ridiculous wages and then he wants to be subsidised by the taxpayer for policing his club. On second thoughts, he is probably a very suitable man to be put in charge of the England team as he is truly representative of the national game.
I spotted another example of excessive greed this week. Pay for attending the House of Lords has been increased to £300 per day. I have voted to abolish this waste of public money and will do so again given the chance. But why should the House of Lords decide to pay themselves such huge expenses just for turning up. The sooner Parliament gets on top of this new scandal the better.
As councils scrabble for money making ruses, the charges being brought in for on street parking take the biscuit. You can park outside your house, but you have to pay. If you do not pay then you get a parking ticket. It is a form of theft. In Retford rogue clampers are emerging to worsen the situation.
Everybody should have the right to park outside their home if they have no drive or garage. Everyone should get a dropped kerb for free. Parking for shoppers should be free, at least for the first hour. Is it not time for some common sense in Worksop?
