Retford had its own mini riot inside a council owned cafe called DN22 which was smashed up by vandals over last weekend. Precisely who did it is being investigated, but I am assured that it will be dealt with as seriously as all other wanton and mindless vandalism.
There are many views about the riots and mine is that greed is a major factor. There can be no excuses and no tolerance of any theft, vandalism or threats of this kind. The Government is proposing that we strengthen marriage: I presume that this means that Government Minister Gregory Barker will resign- he is the one who left his wife and kids to move in with his partner. They want all rioting punished and I presume that this includes Boris Johnson and David Cameron sweeping the Oxford streets outside the restaurant that the Bullingdon Club wrecked when they were student members. And I am calling for no return to Government for expenses scandal former Minister, David Laws. I was booed in Parliament when I opposed him a few weeks ago and I will continue to do so. Any MP banned by Parliament as he was has no place in Government until they have faced the electorate at an election. If there is to be consistency then I look forward to these happening immediately.
I also want a reversal of all police, fire and ambulance service cuts, including in our area. How on earth would we cope with no police cells and reduced police numbers, fewer ambulances and one less fire appliance in Bassetlaw? And I want the targeting of the real problem households. The police know who they are, but what about everyone else. The bullies and thugs in Bassetlaw should lose their council property. They should have a full benefit fraud investigation. Their cars should be checked for tax and insurance. There should be reports on the truancy of all their children. They should be checked to see if they have paid their TV licences.
In other words, the handful of ring leaders of thuggery in every town should be isolated and made to live within the rules. In the past my calls for this have been ignored by the Council and other agencies, this time I expect to see action. Those agencies that do not co-operate can expect to be named and shamed, so you have been warned. It is time for zero tolerance of criminality and living outside the law.
