Bassetlaw Council is being pressured to greatly increase its number of houses, but there is no pressure to increase the number of jobs in this area. The whole planning system is rigged in favour of house building and I do not think that we need lots of additional houses. I do see some that have been badly built and should be knocked down to allow for new replacements.

In the last 10 years the population of the United Kingdom has increased by 3 million. In the last year the increase has been the highest since World War Two and most of this increase is new people coming to the country.

The Westminster orthodoxy is the same as the City of London and the Bank of England: yes we do. They base their views on an economic analysis that appears to show that we need more workers to create economic growth. But economic growth and standards of living are not exactly the same. All these people need supporting, through health, education and childcare. The government pays for this.

Ah yes, say the clever people in London, but these new people pay tax and are entitled to these services. Indeed they are. We are not a country that should ever discriminate.

But let’s go back to the first question, which is the big one, do we need more extra people. I say no. But there is a price to pay and it is the real choice as we are all living longer. Either we all work longer or we bring in more and more new people to do the work and generate the taxes for us. This is the big issue that Britain is dodging.

I believe that our economy will collapse under ever lower wages as new entrants to this country are prepared to work for less, often much less. Profits go up, but most of this is hidden abroad in tax havens. Therefore we should do consider four major changes:

Firstly stop the free flow of labour across Europe. Secondly, remove Crown protection from every UK dependency that allows tax avoidance. Thirdly, agree that our population in this country should stabilise at around 60 million people and take policy action to try to maintain this optimum. Fourthly, incentivise part time work for those who are over 65, by making the first £15,000 of earnings tax free.

If Cameron, Clegg, Brown , Blair and Mandelson get to read this column they will be choking on their cornflakes already.  Its about time that they change their own kids nappies, do their own gardening and wash their own car. I would call this traditional British values in a modern setting. The world cannot sustain its increasing population and we should take decisive action now.
