John Mann in the Worksop Guardiana: 05 March 2010

British Jobs for British Workers was the substance of my Bill that I introduced in Parliament this week. My Bill requires, by law, all jobs to be made available locally and requires skills retraining and new apprenticeships with every major contract. This gives a competitive advantage to companies based in Britain, such as Laing O'Rourke at Steetley, and it disadvantages foreign companies such as the Americans and Italians.

It is only right that major public contracts should provide local jobs and skills and my Bill would prevent the Staythorpe scandal of flying in and flying out of temporary workers art the expense of locals with the relevant skills.

Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe should never be released from prison. I despair at those professionals who are suggesting that he be paroled. I remember what it was like in Leeds and Bradford when the murders were taking place. How no woman was allowed out alone and how I had to chaperone my sister. Sutcliffe should die in prison.

You know when somebody has lost the argument because they resort to insults. I was therefore saddened to see the attack on me which was totally factually incorrect and trying to defend the indefensible. We should avoid personal insults and work together even where we don't agree.

And I do disagree strongly with our council spending our money on bailiffs to pursue council tax from a flood victim living in a caravan. How many more is this happening to? If you are forced into a caravan by flooding then you should not be charged council tax on your caravan or your flooded house.

I hope that the Councillors will respond to my request for meetings on a range of issues where improvements to services are needed. Considering that an appeal on the Vesuvius site will cost council taxpayers as much as £250,000 when the Council loses, let's sit down next week and get agreement on these 1,000 jobs and the football stadium going ahead. Any takers?

Next Wednesday morning sees the 2nd Battalion the Mercian Regiment marching through Retford. These men, fighting in the finest traditions of the Sherwood Foresters, will be welcomed warmly for their courage and fortitude and I hope by large numbers of the great Bassetlaw public.
