John Mann in the Worksop Guardian: 02 April 2010

There has been a magnificent result for Amy Jeffrey this week. Late last year, Amy came down to London to meet Government and present her petition to Downing Street. Now she has won as the Government has agreed to change the rules on Funeral Grants for bereaved students and is now consulting over the details.

Amy has set an example to every young person in the country. Following a terrible personal tragedy at a very young age, Amy has run and won a significant campaign. Its only April, but Bassetlaw Person of the Year should undoubtedly be the formidable Amy Jeffrey.

The Law Society has updated me on the total repayments to miners since I launched my campaign against double charging solicitors. Since I won the very first cases, 321,692 people have asked for their money back and this means over £8 million has been paid back to miners double charged by solicitors and claims handlers.

It is still not too late to get your money back - even if you have no paperwork- ring 01909 506200 for advice or call into my office at 68A Carlton Road.

In Parliament this week I presented a petition collected by the families of St Michael's View on the care homes. In one day they collected 1,500 signatures opposing the care home privatisation when they held a stall on Retford market.

Now I am offering help to the campaigners wanting to keep the Big House open in Edwinstowe, another crucial service threatened by County Council cuts. The Big House is used by 70 children with severe learning difficulties and has been open since 1996. My children do not have these problems, but having heard from families using this centre, it is clear that it is vital to their lives.

But for the grace of God go I is my approach to this, to the care homes and to other vital public services. I hope never to need any of them. But if I face such adversity I want to see high quality and good local support. For me these cuts define what we are about as a society and as a community. There is such a thing as society and I will fight these terrible cuts.
